We’re seeking a talented, hands-on, commercially minded Head of Legal to lead our Legal function and serve as a trusted advisor to the CEO and the Executive Leadership Team. About the Role

As Head of Legal, you will lead the Legal function out of our Head Office and act as the principal in‑house advisor for The Reject Shop across a broad range of legal, regulatory, and risk matters. You will partner closely with executives and operational leaders, offering clear, pragmatic guidance that balances risk and pace in a high‑growth environment.

This role is ideal for a well‑rounded commercial lawyer with top‑tier training who is comfortable drafting, advising, negotiating, and rolling up their sleeves—while also influencing strategy and building the frameworks we need for the future. You will be supported by, and collaborate with, the legal team at Dollarama in Canada.

Key Responsibilities

Commercial & Corporate Advisory

  • Draft, review, and negotiate commercial agreements, supply contracts, service arrangements, and strategic partnerships.
  • Support business units on consumer law, product claims, regulatory reviews, and operational initiatives.

Litigation, Disputes & Regulatory Engagement

  • Manage litigation, disputes, regulatory interactions, and investigations, engaging with external counsel where required.
  • Act as a key point of contact for regulators and industry bodies.

Governance, Risk & Compliance

  • Oversee corporate and regulatory compliance frameworks, including consumer law, product safety, privacy, and retail‑specific regulations.
  • Support certain corporate secretarial filings and governance processes (with additional corporate support provided by Dollarama).
  • Lead the Quality & Product Compliance team to ensure strong product governance, safety, regulatory alignment, and proactive risk management.

Cross‑Functional Business Partnering

  • Provide proactive advice to key functions including Finance, People & Culture, Merchandise and Operations.
  • Support and advise the Property team on lease negotiations, store openings, renewals, and landlord engagement.

Strategic Projects & Growth Enablement

  • Advise on major commercial initiatives and transformation projects.
  • Contribute legal and risk insights to Executive‑level decision‑making.

About You

You will thrive in this role if you are a pragmatic, energetic, solutions‑focused lawyer with strong commercial instincts and the confidence to advise across a wide variety of subject areas.

The candidate will bring :

  • Several years of post‑qualification experience with strong commercial and corporate exposure, with private practice training highly regarded.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide practical, business‑oriented advice in a fast‑paced environment.
  • Experience drafting and negotiating commercial agreements with ease and precision.
  • A generalist mindset – comfortable handling everything from consumer law to property to compliance to disputes.
  • Leadership capability, including the ability to set direction, build capability, influence senior stakeholders, and develop a high‑performing function as the business grows.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills and the ability to influence and collaborate with senior stakeholders.
  • Strong judgment, resilience, and the ability to balance operational needs with sound legal risk management.
  • Knowledge of Australian Consumer Law, product safety, and regulatory frameworks.
